It's been a long time since the last post. Even though I didn't do much painting during the last few months, I was inspired by the idea of guide book illustrations and started to try a few. I picked up the birds that I recently saw in Fukuoka during the New Year vacation, which are Falcated Duck and Baikal Teal, along with one of my most favourite bird families, the needletails, as the subjects. It wasn't too easy, especially to bring out the precise body shape and structure. I remember getting an advice from a well known wildlife artist in Thailand that studying the anatomy of birds can help a lot in your drawing. I can totally understand him now.

I found your blog through Matteo Grilli's. What wonderful illustrations! The control and detail of your ducks, teals, and Needletails is superb but I REALLY love the liveliness of earlier paintings like the Goshawk and the Bush-Warbler. In any case, no matter which style you choose, you do a fantastic job!

I still find it difficult to put the liveliness of the birds into the picture when drawing in a guidebook style. I definitely have to practice more.
I don't think it's a fault in your skill. I think it's more a matter of it being a characteristic of the guidebook style. It would be interesting to see one could make an illustration in the guidebook style but still have a liveliness. Personally I would rather have a guidebook with more lively illustrations - or at least a mix. Perhaps one technically accurate and then a few of the same bird but in a style that has some punch.
